Professional and community activities:
Montalvo retired in 2004 as a machinist after 30 years with Norris Industries in Vernon, where he became a representative for the United Auto Workers and Los Angeles County Federation of Labor.  He served in the city of South Gate’s Planning Commission for 12 years.

Montalvo serves as president of the Democratic Club of South Gate and is one of the co-founders of the Southeast Cities Democratic Club.
